Based on their season-by-season stat line, who is this?

The daily sports guessing game

Athletele is a free daily trivia game for basketball, football, baseball, and hockey fans. Each day it shows you the complete season-by-season stat line of one mystery athlete — every year of their career, the games they played, the numbers they put up — with only the team names hidden. From that stat table alone, can you name the player in three guesses?

It rewards the kind of knowledge sports fans actually carry around: the shape of a career, a scoring peak in exactly the right season, a late-career move to an unexpected team. Each wrong guess uncovers one season's team, and that single clue is often what turns a hunch into the answer.

How to play

  1. Read the stat line. Position, era, and the arc of the numbers narrow things down fast — a sudden scoring surge, a long steady prime, a short explosive peak.
  2. Make a guess. Start typing a name; the autocomplete only offers players who are actually in the pool, so you never waste a guess on someone who can't be the answer.
  3. Use the reveals. You get three guesses. Every miss reveals the team for one season — watch for the trade year or the franchise that gives it away.

Want to keep going? Infinite mode deals unlimited random players and tracks your streak, and you can narrow any sport to a single era or franchise — try naming 1990s Bulls or 2010s Patriots. Playing with friends? Multiplayer races everyone to name the same mystery athlete first.

Tips for cracking the stat line

  • Find the peak season. A player's single best year usually points at a small handful of names from that era.
  • Count the seasons. A 20-year career and a 4-year career are completely different search spaces — length alone rules a lot out.
  • Read the position stats. A quarterback's passing yards, a center's rebounds, a goalie's save percentage each tell you what kind of player you're looking at before you ever see a team.
  • Spend a reveal early when you're stuck. The team a player finished on is often the single biggest tell — sometimes it's worth "wasting" a guess to unlock it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Athletele free?

Yes — completely free, with no account required. Your streaks and statistics are saved privately in your own browser.

Which sports are included?

Four leagues: the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL. Each has its own daily puzzle, and every sport offers both a currently-active player pool and an all-time pool.

How often is there a new puzzle?

There's a new daily player for each sport every day, and everyone in the world sees the same daily athlete — so you can compare results with friends. Infinite mode gives you unlimited players any time you want more.

Where do the stats come from?

Official league data — the NBA, MLB, and NHL public stats APIs and the nflverse open-data project — reaching back decades to each league's early seasons. More detail is on the about page.

Who can be the mystery player?

Only players with substantial careers are eligible, so the answer is always someone a fan could reasonably name. The exact thresholds for each sport are listed in the in-game "?" help menu and in the how-to-play guide.
